The changing landscape of New York City real estate

Posted on 28 October, 2015  in Real Estate

Most people are well acquainted with the fact that tech start-ups, and tech activity in general is now much higher than it used to be, and it has influenced landscapes of many cities in many parts of the world. So, tech hubs, like New York, are lately changing a lot in order to meet the inflow of many tech companies and their priorities. This news was originally reported on Huffington Post, and it is about how tech companies are changing the New York real estate landscape.

To begin with, with increased competition and high prices, many tech companies are drawing a lot of attention when it comes to commercial real estate market. This means that tech startups are making a lot of demand, and they now account for the best part of all bids in the neighborhoods such as Union Square, Chelsea and others. With all this, rent in these neighborhoods is much higher when compared to previous years.

Then, tech companies’ needs are unique, so they usually want brick walls that are exposed, and loft spaces. So, landowners tend to meet their needs, they are now polishing floors and giving more office spaces that would help many tech startups promote a better working atmosphere.
In order to see how this tech boom has changed the city’s landscape, one should see how Garment District looked many years ago. It was once bustling, but technology companies have changed it all. Then, there is the Flatiron District. It once was a cultural area, and now it represents a perfect place for tech startups.

In addition to this, Town Residential, as a part of NYC apartment for sale landscape, is also facing this issue. This real estate services company was founded in 2010 by Andrew Heiberger, and now the company specializes in marketing and property development.

The company’s team consists of experienced professionals who do their best to bring about the company’s success. When it comes with this new issue, the company is also trying to implement new plans and a different approach to sales marketing, taking into consideration the recent boom of tech startups.

So, these tech folks need a place to live, and while some can afford to live in popular neighborhoods, some of them to less developed areas. They are the ones who change the city’s landscape and bring a new development to the city, so the landscape must adapt to them.

Handy Helps People Clean Their Homes Around America

Posted on 22 October, 2015  in Home Improvement

Handy is an app that gives people the ability to look at other peoples’ cleaning businesses, many of which consist of just one worker. Handy is cheap for providing top-notch home cleaning, at only $18 per hour on average. Handy is very popular: at this rate, there are one million dollars in bookings that are carried out every single week. Consider this — Handy only operates in twenty-five metropolitan areas throughout the United States, one in England, and 2 in Canada.

The central allure that Handy provides its users with is its choosiness in respect to the cleaners that it allows to host on their website. Handy has a very, very strict application process that is also pretty lengthy. Less than three percent of all applicants have been admitted to list their services on Handy, which makes Handy more selective than any top college in the United States. Everybody that works on Handy has to be interviewed in person, have background checks submitted, and have ample references from reputable sources.

Many home cleaners have been unable to find jobs because of the difficulty of finding someone who has the money to afford a home cleaner. Fortunately, Handy has effectively reduced the price of home cleaning services because it is one of the first places where many home cleaners can list their services and compete with other cleaners. This has also increased the quality of service that the average home cleaning service provider offers, which is great for consumers.

Handy was founded four years ago by long-time friends Umang Dua and Oisin Hanrahan. They had a general idea as to what they wanted to do with Handy, but were unable to come up with the large sums of money on their own that they needed to start Handy. Luckily, Hanrahan and Dua were able to find financing from two investing corporations, Highland Capital and General Catalyst Partners. It is reported that Handy needed more than ten million dollars to start, which is a lot of money for any startup. But, Handy has to put applicants through rigorous processes and constantly monitor listings on Handy, which makes things more expensive for the company.

Handy has been compared to Uber in respect to Handy handling all the payments and scheduling bookings on while the users of the app don’t have to do much. The clients do not have to pay any sort of fee for using Handy, although the cleaners who list their services on Handy have to pay a roughly 20% fee. This fee goes to cover all of the monitoring that Handy must conduct every day to ensure that Handy is the best app of its kind on the market.

Although Handy isn’t the only app of its kind, it is by far the largest and best app of its kind. It has recently been reported in the news that Handy has swallowed up a competitor by means of purchasing the entire competing app Exec, which was based on the west coast of the United States.

How to Switch to a Better Brand of Dog Food

Posted on 19 October, 2015  in For Dogs

We’ve all seen those commercials about the horrible ingredients found in pet foods. Fillers, by-products and nonessential junk ingredients are all pretty much making up the contents of the kibble in Fido’s bowl. FreedomPop Wants To Give You Free Phone Service

Posted on 16 October, 2015  in Phone Service

Cell phone usage among the UK population is obviously very prominent. In a December 2013 study 83,100,000 mobile phones were in use among the population of 64,100,000. That’s right, more cell phones than there are people. In an era where cell phones are practically mandatory, wouldn’t it be nice if services were free? Well, one company is providing just that.

In a recent report by The Daily Mail, a Los Angeles based company named FreedomPop has revealed they are providing free service to customers in the UK. The mobile provider offers a generous 200 minutes of free talk time, 200 free texts, and 200MBs of data for web usage “for life.” You may obtain extra data services by filling out third-party surveys. You can also do so by downloading coupons and do other simple tasks all on your mobile device. Data can also be shared with family members, and all unused data rolls over to the next month.

FreedomPop provides its service through two ways. It comes at not surprise that FreedomPop on fortune uses SIM cards. Though, more interestingly, you may download their app to receive phone service. This app serves as a unique and convenient way for customers to obtain the free service. Users also receive an international phone number that enables them to make calls all around the world. Which is great news for those who would usually have to pay expensive rates to contact their family and friends in other countries.

The UK is FreedomPop’s first market out of the US. Stephen Stokols, chief executive and co-founder was quoted saying, “We believe everyone should have access to mobile services, and we’re going to make that a reality in the UK.” That is certainly a reality worth getting behind.

The Rise and Rise of Shaygan Kheradpir

Posted on 13 October, 2015  in CEO Profiles

Since his departure from Juniper Networks, the business and technology fields have been watching to see what Shaygan Kheradpir would do next.

Well, he landed at Coriant where Kheradpir has been named Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Kheradpir was already familiar with the operations and senior management there when he was Operating Executive at Marlin Equity Partners. His deft handling of that company’s productions and strategic planning made Kheradpir a logical choice to grow Coriant in a competitive and dynamic end-user market.

Kheradpir has stated Coriant’s versatile and comprehensive “portfolio of packet optical and data networking solutions, world-class technology innovation, global reach, and expanding customer base of top tier network operators, as well as” [its] “cloud providers and large enterprises” are extremely attractive. “As market drivers intensify the imperative for an entirely new level of efficiency and innovation in network architectures, operations, and service creation, Coriant will enable our customers with cost-disruptive networking solutions optimized for the highest degree of automation, programmability, and service agility.”

Kheradpir began his career at GTE Laboratories. He worked on network routing, control and management before becoming Chief Information Officer. No more highly respected resource than The Wall Street Journal said he had earned his reputation “for delivering new products on schedule.” At the turn of the century, GTE merged with Bell Atlantic. Kheradpir was named president of the newly formed Verizon Communication’s e-business division. He would become Verizon’s first CIO/CTO. He was front and center as the company transformed into a multi-media products provider, marketing and marrying conventional networking with web-based software. This led to what are now standards such as carrier-grade voice over IPs and high-speed data, turning Verizon into a major player with $12 billion in assets and a market penetration of over 35 percent.

In 2011, Kheradpir became Chief Operating Officer of Global Retail & Business at Barclays. He was instrumental in the development of the Pingit mobile payments application and other products. He would eventually become the first technology executive to sit on Barclays’ executive team after earning the title of Chief Operations and Technology Officer.

Kheradpir has also served on the board of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and, from 2007 to 2010, was a member of the Advisory Board of the YMCA of Greater New York. He was born in London and raised in Iran. He moved to the United States and earned his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate in electrical engineering with a focus on control systems from prestigious Cornell University.

At Coriant, Kheradpir succeeds Pat DiPietro, who is moving into the role of Vice Chairman and, ironically, taking over the role of Operating Partner at Marlin Equity. This transition is on the heels of DiPietro’s highly regarded counsel that guided Marlin Equity through new product introduction and integration.

With a history that includes overseeing the operations of 7,000 employees, it is expected Kheradpir’s new position at Coriant will include innovations and products that will again change the way we view business.

The NBA’s Popularity Among Milleniels Should Have Led to A Higher Selling Price for the Hawks, Bruce Levenson

Posted on 7 October, 2015  in NBA News

There is a whole lot of debate going on these days about the popularity of Major League sports in the Unites States. Some say that baseball is on the decline, while data shows that baseball’s popularity is surging. The NFL continues to dominate in a very specific way — sky-high TV ratings during NFL Sundays. But the NBA is doing something that neither of the former leagues are doing; appealing to younger age groups.

The game of basketball suits the younger generation, especially in the age of social media. The game is fast paced, played by Adonis-like athletes, high-flying, loud, and the games don’t last very long; an average of two hours as compared to the NFL and MLB’s three-hour games. It is the perfect entertainment in the instant gratification world.

You add this to a young, vibrant community of basketball players that utilize social media to promote their own personal brands, and you get engagement. Young people flock to keep up with their favorite player’s daily thoughts and that only helps to promote the game to younger demographics.

And basketball, more than any other sport, is a one-on-one game. One franchise player can change the fortunes of an entire city. One player can make the difference between a playoff berth and a losing season. Even the NBA’s rules promote individual player takeovers. Defenses are prohibited from loading up on one player before he touches the ball, which almost guarantees that the star will be in the limelight on every play. This sets up an me-against-you mentality that feeds into the games popularity with the younger crowd.

When a millennial’s favorite player is matched up against another superstar, those fans become the stars. They argue “My guy is going to beat your guy tonight,” and by proxy, they are really saying, “I’m right and you’re wrong.” This adversarial camaraderie on social networks only feeds the NBA machine. Young people flock to their own social media platforms to brag, drawing others into the debate over who picks the best players. This makes the NBA more visible to a younger generation than football and baseball.

This is why the future of the NBA looks bright. While the NFL and MLB’s fan base continues to get older, the NBA’s fan base remains age-consistent. The NBA is doing a good job of recruiting young fans, and those young fans stay fans throughout their lives. While football and baseball’s popularity are still higher than the NBA’s popularity, the future looks brighter for basketball. And this is something that Goldman Sachs and Inner Circle Sports should have taken into account when they sold the Hawks for Bruce Levenson.

Levenson raked in $730 million, much lower than a projected value of $1 billion. The former owner of the Hawks hired Goldman Sachs and Inner Circle Sports to broker the sale. While Levenson will walk away with an enormous profit, perhaps the firms could have done better projecting what should be a healthy future for the game, the team and the NBA.

Posted on 5 October, 2015  in Shopping Tech

Smartphones are used to communicate, to make movies and to share moments and memories. Now, smartphones are being used to shop in an advanced way. There is new technology out there from a new startup that can make it easy to search any item and shop for anything a person desires. This new visual search on slyce technology works directly from a smartphone, giving anyone with access to mobile devices the ability to get whatever they want, whenever they want.

What Is Slyce?

Slyce is a technology startup that allows users to search and buy products using the camera on their smartphones. Slyce works by a person seeing an item that they like and opening the Slyce app and taking a photo of the item. The Slyce app then reads the photo simultaneously and gives the user information about the item such as, the brand, where to buy the item and the price. The Slyce app also gives users the option of purchasing the item directly through the application. The Slyce app gives users options on which retailer to purchase the item from.

Slyce has a technology called the universal scanner that lets users easily take photos. The universal scanner can be used to scan items, barcodes, coupons and QR codes. When a person scans a barcode or QR code, the information on the item comes up instantly. Slyce’s universal scanner can also be used to scan printed materials such as, billboards and advertisements.

Slyce’s New Venture

In 2014, Slyce purchased Pounce, a Tel-Aviv based shopping application. Slyce purchased the company for $5 million. Originally, Pounce was used to shop catalogs and print ads. Slyce will be using that technology for their own application, giving their customers that ability. With the purchase of Pounce, Slyce has improved their own smartphone application significantly.
